The aim of the EFFORT (Ecology from Farm to Fork Of microbial drug Resistance and Transmission) project is to provide scientific evidence and high quality data that will inform decision makers, the scientific community and other stakeholders about the consequences of anti-microbial resistance (AMR) in the food chain, in relation to animal health and welfare, food safety and economic aspects. Specifically, all along the project, EFFORT has striven to answer the following fundamental, but complex questions demanded by risk managers:

• What is the impact of antimicrobial usage in food-producing animals on human exposure to AMR determinants?
• What are the most important transmission routes and sources of human exposure to AMR determinants?
• What is the impact on human health of transfer of AMR determinants between commensals and pathogenic microorganisms?
• How can human exposure to AMR determinants through food-producing animals be reduced?
• What is the most cost-effective way of monitoring antimicrobial resistance occurrence in food-producing animals and in the food chain?

From 26-28 November 2018, the project consortium organised its final meeting where well-known external speakers from international organisations (i.e. FAO, WHO, OIE and EMA) and prestigious researchers gave an overview about antimicrobial stewardship in future animal production, current risk management tools and the use of the guidelines for the prudent use of antimicrobials in practice. The EFFORT consortium presented the results of the project giving an outline of its research during the last five years. At the end of the conference, a policy round table which aimed to translate the EFFORT results into policy took place giving place to engaging discussions.

The Project consortium is now writting the remaining deliverables and reports giving the main achievements and results of the project. Those documents once approved by the European Commission will be uploaded on the public project website.
